Adversity comes at us in all different shapes and sizes. No matter the form of adversity, it always seems to come up at the "wrong" time. People react to adversity differently...some hide and hope it goes away, some look at it in the face and challenge it, and others seek help from family and friends. Hiding from it usually ends up with whatever problem on top of you, and the climb out is no fun. Seeking help can be comforting as you may be able to get different perspectives that will help you get through it. Facing it head on is sometimes a difficult, but necessary option which can strengthen you in the end. We have most likely chosen all three options at one time or another in our life. The point is...when it hits you, the initial attack can seem overwhelming and may diminish your confidence for the moment, but getting through it which almost always happens makes us stronger...at least for a short time.
The next time adversity strikes, take this three step approach...
1) When it initially hits you, stop, take a breath and tell yourself "it's not the end of the world"
2) Think about the solutions, paths, and outcomes that may be possible, figure out which is most probable and how you can deal with it.
3) Once you have gone through the adversity, try not to enjoy your victory just in the short term, but take note of it as a life lesson. Carry this lesson with you for the next time it, or something similar happens so you can refer to this instance and know that you will get through it.
No matter what you do in life, make sure you learn from it. If you are not learning, you're losing...
