Have you ever had one of those days or times when everything was just flowing perfect! You could do no wrong. Your mind was working at such an efficient rate. Conversations, ideas, and thoughts just flowed perfectly. It almost feels like an out of body experience where you are looking down upon yourself and thinking..."I'm on fire!" Those are the best days and times because everything is effortless. Those moments and times are just that, they are times when your brain enters a "Flow" state. Athletes know this as being in the "Zone." For Athletes, the game seems to go in slow motion and the game seems easy!
Being in the Zone doesn't just apply to athletes, it happens to everyone at certain points in their life. This phenomenon is when your brain enters the state of Flow. The Flow State lies in a sweet spot in between Anxiety and Boredom.
It's a great place to be when your brain rests between these two states of mind, but it's a fine line to be able to enter the State of Flow. It would be great to be able to get into the Flow whenever we wanted, but if that were the case life would be simple. As we all know, life is everything but simple.
There is some good news! Although, it is not possible to enter the Flow whenever we want, we can increase our chances. There are three basic elements that if you apply to your daily life will increase your chances of entering the State of Flow...
1) Routine - If you surround what you are doing, or your "goal" with routine, it puts your mind into familiar state which calms it and takes it out of the anxiety zone.
2) Repetition - The more you do something, the better you get at it. This applies to anything and everything you do.
3) Visualization - When you visualize doing something, it is like you have already done it. It doesn't matter if it's a golf swing, or a conversation, the more you repeat (repetition) in your head (visualization) the better you become.
Although, these are the three main elements, there is more to it. If you are interested in learning more about the State of Flow and how to get yourself into the flow more often I have constructed a training program. When you're done, you'll look at how you live your everyday life differently. Life will become easier as you will be able to enter the state of flow more often .
