How often do you think about your breath? Not whether it is good or bad, but the process of breathing in and out.
The answer is almost always…NEVER!
Breath is life! If we stop breathing, guess what…we die.
Think about this….when you exhale, you get rid of 70% of the toxins in your body…that’s crazy!
The benefits of taking a slow, deep breath are many. Besides the toxins you get rid of which allows you to live a healthier life, it decreases your appetite and calms you down.
In fact, when you take a slow, deep breath, especially if your exhale is longer than your inhale, you activate your Parasympathetic Nervous system, which is also known as the “rest and digest” system.
We live most of our days/lives in the Sympathetic which is the “Fight or Flight” system.
Fight or Flight is good if a Sabertooth Tiger is chasing you, but being in the state chronically can wreak havoc on your body.
This is all good stuff, but how can you control your life by controlling your breath?
An example is when our emotions come up, they take approximately 5–7 seconds. If we don’t catch them before they have made themselves present, many times we become slaves to them. Take anxiety or fear. Once an emotion arises, we are just along for the ride…it could be 30 seconds, 30 minutes or 3 days before we gain control of our emotional state.
When you learn to recognize an emotion that is starting to arise, stop and take one slow, deep breath, you have just taken control of the emotion by recognizing it.
If you can learn to connect your breath with everything you do…you can take control of your life!
